TLU welcomes new interim president

There is no doubt that as the fall semester begins TLU is in a unique position this year. There are many new faces at TLU that will lead the movement towards achieving the goals set in 2009 in the strategic plan. One of these new faces is that of Dr. Robert Vogel. Vogel arrived in Seguin on July 26 to begin his position as Texas Lutheran University’s interim president. He arrives at TLU with an impressive and extensive history beginning his fourth interim president position with TLU. Vogel will be assisting in the search for TLU’s next president but will also be a strong contributing force in guiding the direction of the university’s future while he calls TLU home.

New vision kicks off new football season

September 11 marks the first official kick off of the TLU football season and there is much to prepare for, before facing Austin College.

According to Sterling Jeter, Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach, “We have a lot of kids that are really interested in working and getting better. With all of the coaching staff being new, everyone, even the old players are all starting off on the same foot.”

The Texas Lutheran football team will have around 130 players all striving for one goal. A brand new coaching staff started off the year with the pre season football camp to help them gain a hold of the upcoming competition. Danny Padron, the new head football coach of the TLU bulldogs, will have his hands full with close to 80 new players on the field.

How to break out of your shell

Getting back into the swing of school can be a difficult, process especially for new students. There are three easy steps to saying goodbye to school bells and teachers, and saying hello to dorm rooms and professors.

The options on how to meet new people are limitless on campus. The first step a student should take is to become engaged in something on campus. The TLU campus offers a variety of entertainment for students to get to know their peers. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the fun of summer has to end. Filling your shoes full of sand at an intramural beach volleyball game or attending a concert on the front lawn are fun ways to make new friends.

Advice from a Seasoned Student

Advice from a seasoned student

This Saturday current students, alumni, administrators, faculty, staff, members of the community and friends of TLU helped move in the new students into their new homes on campus. Personally, I find the process over the top nostalgic. The residence halls at TLU hold some special memories from my freshman year, recollections that, while sometimes slightly embarrassing, are not something I’ll soon forget.

When I started here back in the fall of 2007, ages ago, I know, friends and family told me over and over that these four years would go by so fast and to make the most of the time I have. Now that I’m sitting in my last semester, I find myself repeating the advice over and over, even to myself (I’ve still got three months , three weeks and four days- but who’s counting?). While graduating early doesn’t necessarily follow the advice to the T, I still think I’ve got some good experiences under my belt and I’m pretty sure that makes me qualified to hand out some advice to our incoming first year group.

More than chocolate; global perspectives course

Course goes beyond the classroom in teaching the importance of food

“We have 24 hours in a day that we spend sleeping, dreaming, spending time with people we care about, but we also eat throughout the day. Food is so important, why is it that we don’t give it the thought it needs?” Judith Hoffmannn, associate professor of geography, said.

“More than Chocolate,” a global perspective course offered this semester taught by Hoffmann and Ana Maria Gonzalez, associate professor of modern languages, puts an emphasis on food and what it means to students individually.

The course follows themes of family tradition in food, where food comes from, the global and cultural exchange found in the history of food and its origins.

Tim G

Interview with Tim Gabrielson

On Sunday, Aug. 22, world-famous magician Tim Gabrielson performed as part of TLU's Welcome-Week.

He spoke with the LSL to share his views on magic, comedy and more.

How long have you been involved in magic?

About 20 years. I was about 13 years old when I got my big boom…I worked at a theme park when I was in high school. Six days a week, three shows a day, so every element was thrown at me… I just got addicted to making people happy.

A first year perspective

After spending four years in high school, many students look forward to college life. It is something new and exciting for all freshman,  but at the same time it can be scary and intimidating, especially for those who are living on campus. Unlike the big transition from junior high to high school, family and friends are left behind. Students have to experience life on their own for the first time.

After being at TLU four days earlier than most students, I have come up with my own perspective of college life and it is not as frightening as some may make it out to be. Luckily, everyone is quite nice and helpful at TLU, so it makes it easy to make new friends.
