A first year perspective

After spending four years in high school, many students look forward to college life. It is something new and exciting for all freshman,  but at the same time it can be scary and intimidating, especially for those who are living on campus. Unlike the big transition from junior high to high school, family and friends are left behind. Students have to experience life on their own for the first time.

After being at TLU four days earlier than most students, I have come up with my own perspective of college life and it is not as frightening as some may make it out to be. Luckily, everyone is quite nice and helpful at TLU, so it makes it easy to make new friends.

Teachers and faculty are quite truthful when they say that getting involved in extra curricular activities is a good way to make friends.

Joining an extra curricular activity is like gaining instant friends.  Join an activity you are interested in, and it will be obvious that you will have something in common with the other participants.

At orientation, we had to play games together in order to help break the ice. Although these games may have been awkward, they help you become more confident in yourself and acquainted with those around you. With this is mind, the fear of the difficulty of making new friends will eventually fade away.

Making it to class on time may still be a problem for us freshman,  even though we had the campus tour. Sometimes it is easier for us to figure things out the hard way, especially when it is over one hundred degrees outside and all you can think about is being in contact with the air conditioning.

Despite the awkward situations and having to deal with life away from
home, TLU will eventually become your home away from home once you get
settled in, make friends, and get used to college life. Orientation has come to an end. It is important to  just be yourself so that everything will run smoothly during your freshman year of college.
